POPULAR MAGAZINE INTERVIEWS
I was interviewed earlier this year in Que Leer, the preeminent Spanish cultural magazine, on where I saw the future of the library going in the digital era:

PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY MAGAZINE ARTICLES
I was involved with the University of Illinois section of the Society of Women Engineers for more than half a decade, serving as their Staff Advisor from 2008 to 2009, and as the co-lead and special advisor to their diversity and historical initiatives, as well as helping to plan their 2010 regional conference.

Under the leadership of UIUC Section President and Diversity Lead Jessica Wood, SWE launched an ambitious diversity initiative beginning in 2007 that conducted two surveys of the gender diversity climate in the University of Illinois College of Engineering, involved reaching out to student organizations, faculty, and sponsors across the campus and College, and a final report and proposal that was presented to the Dean of the College.

The College is now launching a series of diversity initiatives to address the findings of the report and working towards several of the recommendations of the proposal.

In the addition to the Diversity Initiative, we also launched a History Initiative in advance of UIUC SWE's 50th anniversary in 2010. Illinois was the 4th Collegiate Section founded and thus has a rich history that had largely been lost to time.

We published two articles in the National SWE magazine, one outlining the Diversity Initiative, and the other a how-to guide for other Collegiate SWE sections on how to research their section's history.

  • Diversity from the Ground Up. With Jessica Wood. SWE: Magazine of the Society of Women Engineers. Society of Women Engineers. Conference 2008 issue, pp. 40-46. Read an overview of UIUC's student-led Diversity Initiative.
  • Your Collegiate Section History is Waiting to be Discovered. With Jessica Wood. SWE: Magazine of the Society of Women Engineers. Society of Women Engineers. Fall 2008 issue, pp. 62-64. Read an overview of UIUC's history initiative, along with tips on how to research your own student organization's history.
For those intested in the diversity summary report that we submitted to the College of Engineering, or our final recommendations that we proposed to the Dean, both are available below.
POPULAR MAGAZINE ARTICLES
The University of Illinois Alumni Magazine has used several of my photos in their magazine (including their cover), and in 2005 I wrote an article for them based on my UIHistories site about the Class Tree Wars:

  • Class Tree Wars. Illinois Alumni Magazine. University of Illinois Alumni Association (Urbana, IL). Nov/Dec 2005 issue, p. 48.

ELECTRONICALLY PUBLISHED BOOKS
I have written five books that have been published electronically:

WHITE PAPERS
In November 2008 my colleague Scott Althaus and I released a study on the revisionist history of a key White House press release relating to the Coalition of the Willing for the Iraq War. We found that the list was altered over a period of years to add and remove countries, all without altering the date of the press releases, making it appear that the countries had always (or never) been a member of the coalition. The study was covered by the New York Times:

COLLECTIONS
I am the Founder and Chief Photographer of UIPhotos/Phantasm, the University of Illinois's primary image collection, featuring more than 80,000 images:

UNIVERSITY INFORMATIONAL PUBLICATIONS
While at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications I was heavily involved in giving tours of its scientific visualization and virtual reality facilities and helped organize and oversee its participation in several Engineering Open Houses (EOH). As part of this outreach activity, I wrote a series of one-page informational pamphlets that were given to visitors. These proved extremely popular and became a sort of "souvenir" of a visit to our facilities:

AGENDA SETTING
I compiled a brief evolutionary overview of Agenda Setting in May 2009 that traces its history through the lens of propaganda research:

EVENT MINING FROM NEWS REPORTS
Much of my work on event mining from news reports is not yet published. However, I have included below the final results of a small grant-funded pilot study I conducted in 2009 for the Academy of Entrepreneurial Leadership at the University of Illinois (AEL) on the compilation of a global database of entrepreneurship events from newspaper content.
